NEW DELHI: The developments in the Soviet Union figured in the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Indian Parliament) on Monday with several members expressing concern at the process of disintegration of that country.

Members cutting across party lines welcomed the return of Mikhail Gorbachev to power after a failed coup attempt and assailed the govt for being confused in reacting to the developments.

The matter was raised through a Special mention by Rajmohan Gandhi of the Janata Dal (JD) and the deputy chairperson Najma Heptullah allowed several members to express their views on the subject. Some of the members also demanded a full-fledged discussion on the situation.

Members from the left parties including Gurdas Das Gupta of the Communist Party of the India and Samar Mukherjee of the Communist Party of India Marxist expressed concern at attempts to illegalize the communist movement in the Soviet Union.
