THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fresh violence claimed one more life in the State recently, even as the army staged flag marches in the city and neighboring townships is a bid to control the spreading communal strife raging.
In Maharashtra where two had been stabbed to death and more than 100 injured, curfew was reimposed in Malegaon town following the stabbing of Shiv Sena activist.. According to the Nasik police control room, about 20 people were arrested.
Back in Kerala, about 200 army men staged flag marches in coastal Poonthura, where violence began after an RSS drill was allegedly attacked by Islamic Sevak Sangh (ISS) workers.
The police said a youth riding a bicycle was hacked to death by miscreants in the busy East Fort area of the State capital.
Banks remained closed in response to the bandit calls given by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Islamic Sevak Sangh (ISS) activists.
Streets wore a deserted look with the State Road Transport buses not plying.
The police fired two rounds in the air to disperse a violent mob which attacked a mobile patrol party at Malip puram in Narakkal police station area of Emakulam district. A sub-inspector and a constable were injured in the attack by striking activists.
At Neyyaitinkara, a place of worship was allegedly attacked by some miscreants. Buses of the Kerala State Electronics Development were attacked.
A woman employee of the Corporation sustained minor injuries following stone-throwing. Despite sporadic violence, mainly in the city, there was “general improvement” in the law and other situation, officiating Chief Minister Padmarajan told newsmen here.
