KATHMANDU: An Ecuadorian mountaineer fell to his death on an expedition to Annapurna in the Himalayas, Nepal’s tourism ministry said on Thursday.
Ramiro Navarette, 34, is the 18th person to have died since September, the start of the current climbing season in the world’s highest mountains.
The ministry said Navarette fell to his death on October 17, the day after he reached the East Summit, 10 meters (33 feet) below Annapurna’s main 8,026 meter (26332 foot) peak:
Seven Czechoslovaks, four Nepalese, two Japanese, two Icelanders, a pole and a Frenchman have also died.
