WASHINGTON: Chinese students in America have lost faith in their own country and are unlikely to return now that they have won the right to stay in the United States, a student leader says.

Most of the 80,000 students, scholars and their dependents affected by the immigration bill President Bush signed Oct.9 will apply for permanent residence, said Dr. Haiching Zhao, chairman of the National Committee on Chinese Student Affairs.

The majority would love to go back,” Zhao said, citing the long tradition of Chinese intellectuals returning from study abroad to help the motherland. But few believe the Beijing government’s promise they will be welcomed home with all past political activities forgiven, he said.
