MEHAM: The chief minister of Haryana, Om Prakash Chautala Tuesday filed his nomination papers from the Meham assembly constituency, stating that he would resign if he did not get a lead of over 17,000 votes in the May 26 by elections.

Chauthala, who is the son of Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal, was accused of large scale booth capturing and rigging in the February assembly election in Meham. The election commission called for a repoll in the constituency. The repoll, on February 28 was marked by widespread violence, leading the commission to declare it void and call for a fresh election.

The chief minister who filed his papers at the office of the sub divisional magistrate after paying a visit to the powerful Meham Chaubisi Panchayat Chabootra (a local self-governing body), announced he would not seek votes for himself from Meham and Darba Kalan, the two assembly seats from where he is contesting.

Amid Fiery rhetoric at a public meeting at the technological institute campus grounds here, he accused his opponents of being “paper tigers” and challenged them to face him in the polls.
