CHANDIGARH: Central government has announced that Chandigarh would be transferred to Punjab on June 21st 1986 and it has also extended the term of Venkatramia Commission by ten days. The government has made it clear that this will not affect the transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab. ‘The decision to extend the term of the Commission was taken on May 31st by the Political Affairs Committee of the Cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The decision was extension was granted. The government in a statement has said that the extension of the commission of Chandigarh to Punjab. In terms of the Punjab settlement the government of India has decided to transfer Chandigarh t Punjab on June 21 1986. The government categorically stated that the transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab on June 21 is in-keeping with the spirit underlined in the accord. The government of India is confident that the major initial live in fulfilling a memorandum Of the settlement which is integral document will be welcomed by all. This shall not be taken as 2 victory of one over the other. It is step towards peace and humanity for all sections of people of Punjab and Haryana and fulfillment of important national commitment the government said. The main reason for the extension in terms Of the commission government Said that there has not been. an agreement between Punjab and Haryana on the villages which Could be transferred to Haryana in lieu of Chandigarh that in the original claim statement that Haryana did not prefer any claim to any specific village and Preferred the claim only on May 29th evening and May 30th.
