CHANDIGARH: The Central Bureau of Investigation last week arrested Assistant General Man: ager Jai Narayan Sharma and Assistant Procurement Office: A.S. Sodhi of Super Bazar on charges of corruption.

It also registered a ‘regular case’ against the former General Manager and present SDM I.S. Sandhu and two private millers in this connection

A CBI press release said that its Officials have seized documents pertaining to the purchase of a house in Sector 8 for Rs 9 lakh by Sandhu during his tenure as General Manager in June 1991.

He had spent Rs 4.62 lakh on renovation of the house and paid Rs 3.17 lakh to a car agency. Incriminating documents pertaining to his other assets worth Rs 1.35 Lakh have also been seized during a search of his house.

 Searches have also been conducted on the offices and residential premises of the other accused.

During 1991-92 the Super Bazar officials misrepresented in files the non-availability of sufficient funds to lift wheat even when as per the official accounts they had Rs 13, 22,792 at their disposal. The FCI had vide # public notice in December 1991 offered 2000 metric turns of wheat for open sale to the roller flour mills Atta chakkis bread manufacturers and government agencies in the union territory The maximum quantity to be allotted to a roller flour mill Of a government-controlled organization was 500 metric turns. The rate of wheat was Rs 310 per quintal.

These mills were not entitled to more wheat as they had already availed of the facility under the scheme However to enable them to get more and sell it at higher rates the officials went out of the way in making out a Case whereby the millers had to return the Atta to the Super Bazar for sale at control rates.
