OTTAWA: Canadian immigrant of Indian origin faces jail term in the US for allegedly planning to help an Indian militant espousing the cause of Khalistan, enter Canada illegally.
Pinder Singh Brar has been accused of using a false passport to enter the US illegally at Pembina, North Dakota, to meet the alleged militant Daya Singh Sandhu, his wife and six year old son, and smuggle them into Canada using false documents.
According to the US Immigration and Naturalization service, all of them were arrested at the Minnesota airport.
While the child has been subsequently released to relatives in California, the other three are being held without bail pending an immigration hearing slated for January 22. Sandhu, who is expected to appeal for asylum, is wanted in India in cases of militant activities, including the 1993 bombing of bus, which killed eight persons and injured 29.
