NEW DELHI: The Canadian government is likely to approach the Indian government for the release of a citizen supporting the Khalistan movement now lodged in Amritsar jail allegedly for several crimes including several killings.
Bhupinder Singh who along with his family had migrated to Canada returned last year illegally to Punjab from Pakistan. The Punjab police says he committed several crimes and was arrested after an encounter in August 1988. The accused wrote to the Canadian High Commission asking for help and that the matter of his release be taken up with the Indian government. Earlier the local police on their own had told the High Commission that Bhupinder Singh did not want any help from them.
The second secretary at the High Commission, Mr. Daniel Trembley wrote to Bhupinder Singh and later met him in jail on August 9. On his return to Delhi also wrote to Mr. Amar Pal Singh Randhawa counsel for the accused.
The High Commission has sought details of charges against Bhupinder Singh including the copy of interrogation and the first information report so that the matter can be taken up with the Indian government in accordance with the Vienna conventions on councilor relations.
