YUBACITY: The Sikh Students Association of UC Berkeley has come out with the following statement.
In the past few years, the direction of the Sikh youth in North America has taken a step downward toward total assimilation with in the dominant Western culture and the total severing of all connections with the past. No longer is the Punjabi culture one to be ‘proud to possess and practice even in these foreign lands, but it has been reduced down to being thought of as an “outdated, impractical culture” that is to be totally shunned.
IN the same respect, the religious philosophies of the Gurus are unknown to the Sikh youth of today. What has happened to the ambitious and adventurous Sikh youth that formed the vanguard of intellectualism and political activism through not only Sikh history but also through modern Indian history?
Outside of Punjab, the Sikh community has not been success full in forming any organizations to enlighten the Sikh masses with the teachings of the Gurus and the glorious Sikh history full of great names like Banda Singh Bahadur, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, General Hari Singh Nalwa, and Sardar Bhagat Singh Shaheed only to begin to name the thousands of personalities. In the same respect, no Organization equivalent to the AllIndia Sikh Students Federation has been made to unite the Sikh youth and educate the North American masses about the Punjabi culture and the Sikh religion.
