ALBERTA: Jeet Singh Shergill will put his case to the people of McCall on the by election. The by-election is necessary due to the sudden death in November 1994 of Harry Sohal, PC MLA for Calgary McCall. Shergill launched his campaign with an aggressive speech to the Party faithful. He pledged to balance the budget without hurting people. “Albertans are losing their future because the Tory government is determined to balance the budget on the backs of Albertans.”

“The people of McCall, and all Albertans, need to know that the province is teaching children how to be the highly skilled labor force that we need to have a secure future.

As it is, our children are not being adequately trained to compete in the international marketplace. If our children, our future taxpayers, are not able to compete internationally, Alberta will continue to see its standard of living corded.”

“Albertans are losing more and more health benefits every day. Waiting periods for surgery are getting longer. Hospitals are reeling from cutbacks that see them understaffed and underfunded. Doctors are packing their bags and moving out of the province. Nurses are unemployed. Our health care system is being systematically dismantled. Our seniors, most of whom live on fixed incomes, are being forced to accept a bigger and bigger tax bite, at a time when they can least afford the increased taxes and user fees. We need to treat our elderly with the respect they have earned.”

On the mismanagement of provincial finances he says, “Cut and slash is just as bad as tax and spend.

We are watching a Tory government destroy our once vibrant economy, again, Without paying much attention to the welfare of ordinary Albertan.

We must learn from our past mistakes and locus on the future.” By Shergill. “Every Alberton understands that we need lo control our expenditures and balance the budget. But there are two sides to the budget-dollars and people. If you deal with only the dollars. you deal with only half of the issue The people of Alberta are most important part of the budget and they are getting the least attention.

Tories are taking credit for an upturn in the province’s economy that they didn’t even help foster,” says Shergill. Instead pelting Albertans through all this pain With their get-out-of-debt-quick scheme, We should follow a more prudent path. Alberta is blessed with abundant resources, both human and natural. The budget can be balanced without creating excessive hardship for Albertans. We should not be risking the decades of work it has taken to build our first-rate system of education, health care, and social services.
