PHAGWARA: Former Union Home Minister Buta Singh said that further extension in service to the Punjab Chief Secretary, Ajit Singh Chatha, and the State Police Chief, K.P.S. Gill, would tantamount to contempt of Court because the High Court and Supreme Court had passed strictures against them. ‘Talking to reporters here, Buta Singh said that if the Punjab police commandos had been sent out by order of the Election Commissioner for election duty, then it was right to do so but in case they had been dispatched following an agreement between the two state governments, then it would lead to many questions.
Condemning the suppression of the agitation by dissident Congress MP, Jagmeet Singh Brar, Buta Singh said’ that he agreed with Brar in presenting his views ‘on the outstanding demands of Punjab but he did not agree with him on all the issues.
On the Punjab Chief Minister’s claim regarding the visit of the Prime Minister to the state, Buta Sineh quipped ‘“Peonle have become habitual” to his statements: and added that the people of Punjab would welcome a visit by PV. Narasimha Rao as this was the most appropriate time to do so. The Congress leader advocated continuation of the ban of the Vishva Hindu Parishad, which expires on December 10, saying that the activities of the organization were a challenge to communal harmony in the country.
