WASHINGTON: President Bush told an influential Jewish organization recently that he is formally asking Congress to give Israel $10 billion in loan guarantees to house immigrants.
He opposed the plan for months but now says, “Don’t let any member of Congress tell you we can’t afford this.”
Central to the dispute was Israel’s policy of encouraging new settlements in lands it captured from the Arabs in 1967.
