Rani tried hard to make her young marriage work, but she could not give her in-laws the automobile they demanded. Her husband and mother-in-law doused her with kerosene and tried to burn her to death outside their home in New Delhi, India.

Rani survived but the custom of bride burning is an increasing problem in India that authorities have so far been unsuccessful in stopping. James Miles in the UPI New Delhi bureau wrote the 1,000word (DOWRY). It is illustrated with a picture of women demonstrating.

The story is accompanied by a sidebar out of Dallas about an Indian author who has succeeded in breaking the bonds that shackle women. The story by Harihar Krishnan (DOWRYNOVELIST) runs 600 words.
