London — British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s trip to Asia next week will give her chance to ‘‘show the flag and get a feel for the countries,’ a government official said Wednesday.

Thatcher is to set off April 4 on the trip that will take her to Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and India.

The official said the 10day mission was also aimed at promoting mutually beneficial trade but that no specific contracts were expected.
