AMRITSAR: A hair rising story of how the police treats militant Sikh youths in Punjab was outlined by the manner in which a 30-year old youth was found by the local residents at Putlighar near Guru Nanakwada. The youth was reportedly thrown out of a running police jeep. He was unconscious and his body has numerous deep injuries. The reporter of a Jalandhar daily found the youth’s condition most pitiable. The youth had no clothes except for his underwear. His entire body had blue marks on it. His left arm bore the name Maninder Singh. The people who came to rescue the youth tried to make him wear clothes but the youth threw away the clothes. Holding his hair tightly the youth cried out: “torture me as much as you can!”
Evidently the Youngman was tortured so severely that he lost his mental balance.
Later Bhagat Puran Singh the famous human rights activist took away the youth to his place and arranged medical assistance to him. The Bhagat tried to have him admitted to the emergency ward of the Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital but its administration refused such assistance on the ground that the injuries on the youth’s body were too old. The administration asked Bhagat Puran Singh to bring the youth to the hospital later.
Sikh leaders in separate statements condemned the management of the hospital and asked it not to associate the holy name of the ninth Guru with the hospital if it has to deal with patients in such a callous manner.
