From News Dispaches NEW DELHI: Lt General Mayadas, former director general of Weapons and Equipment who did the technical evaluation of the Bofors, in 1984 said the gun was not amongst the main contenders.

The technical report of the 15 member Mayadas committee had placed the Bofors gun third after the Austrian and French guns.

The Austrian gun was placed first because of its superior range and better maneuverability. The

French gun came second in the evaluation.

The Bofors guns had a shorter range, were less maneuverable, and were more costly than their competitors.

The breach of a Bofors gun also exploded during a demonstration, General Mayadas said.

In fact, General Sunderji was also opposed to the Bofors gun but after he was appointed Chief of the Army Staff, within 14 days he recommended the Bofors Gun.
