JALANDHAR: Leaders of the Bharti Kisan Union led by Ajmer Singh Lakhowali made last ditch efforts early this week to persuade Akali leaders to agree to setting up one candidate against Congress(I) from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency but without success. Both Parkash Singh Badal and Simranjit Singh Mann were present at International Hotel where Lakhowal made an impassioned plea for unity. The B.K.U. leaders later decided 10 appeal to the Sikh masses directly to make a wise use of their votes and bring about unity at the level of the masses because top leaders were unwilling to agree to a joint candidate.
