CHANDIGARH: The Bharti Kisan Union (Lakhowal) is going ahead with the program of procuring resignations of sarpanches and punches in Punjab to be handed over to the Governor to protest against police repression.
The BKU launched this program from Ludhiana last month and now it is concentrating its activities in the Malwa region.
According to the reports reaching here, it collected resignations of about 200 panches and sarpanches from the Moga sub-division of the Faridkot district this week.
At the time when the Alkalis are virtually inactive and have confined themselves merely to issuing statements, the BKU has taken upon itself the political role. The call for the boycott of forthcoming elections was given by a major section of the militant’s but it is the BKU which is out in the field calling upon the people to boycott elections.
The Akali factions were party to the election boycott resolution passed by the Anti-Repression Action Committee which was disbanded later on the directive of the Panthic Committee (Sohan Singh). This decision was to be ratified by the working committees of various Akali factions, The Akali Dal (Badal) president, Parkash Singh Badal, was the first to ratify the boycott call followed by Akali Dal (Mann).
The campaign launched by the BKU in the 1989 elections, the BKU had performed a key role. The authorities do not rule low polling in case the BKU continues with this campaign.
