CHANDIGARH: Bhartiya Kisan Union has called upon sarpanches and panches in Punjab to oppose the army’s deployment in the state and resign from their posts to protect against police repression. B.K.U. chief Ajmer Singh Lakhowal and Press secretary Satnam Singh in a joint statement said that the state office of the B.K.U. as well as its district offices have received resignation of 20,000 sarpanches and panches so far, They expected nearly 75% of a total of 70,000 village representatives to resign by next week, The B.K.U. leaders also called upon the peasantry to boycott the forthcoming election as a just poll under the present dispensation was not possible.
