JALANDHAR: Babbar Khalsa International has called for sowing of sugarcane by farmers in Punjab In a joint statement issued here by Bhai Dharam Singh Kasthiwal and Bhai Madha Singh Babbar it was stated that top leaders of B.K.I met somewhere near Malerkotla. The leaders included Bhai Sukhdev Singh Chacha Wadhawa Singh Bhai Kulwant Singh Bhai Mahal Singh Bhai Sukhwinder Singh and Bhai Balwinder Singh. The meeting was also attended by more than 150 armed militants. In a resolution the B.K.I asked the farmers of Malerkotla Dhuri Barnala Longowal and Sherpur to sow sugarcane in one-fifth of their holdings.
Militants evidently have no place to hide in Punjab’s flat topography and they need cover to carry on guerilla activities.
Sometime ago the Panthic Committee (Dr Sohan Singh) had given a call for the curtailment of wheat and paddy sowing Punjab but had not issued a positive call for planting sugarcane. Even this limited call by the committee went unnoticed in Punjab because it was neither published by any newspaper nor was it taken up by these who claim to be pro-militant Akalis.
There has been criticism of the priorities set for itself by a section of the militants. Instead of paying attention to the military requirements of the militant youths such as the sowing of sugarcane the advisors of the committee thought it prudent to pay lop-sided attention to the introduction of Punjabi which according to critics could easily wait. In any case the pro-Punjabi campaign has also waned.
