Part of the party’s strength in New Delhi came from the solid support of Sikhs, angered by the Government’s failure to investigate and punish the perpetrators of massacres and arson that left thousands of their people dead here after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by Sikh bodyguards in 1984.

The Sikhs have always held local Congress Party Political bosses responsible for encouraging or not stopping the carnage in Delhi neighborhoods. Two of the politicians whom Sikhs and human tights groups wanted investigated, Dharam Dass Shastri and Jagdish Tytler who is Minister of Food Processing lost their races for De the parliamentary seats in last week’s voting.
