AMRITSAR: The 4 Bihar Regt whose men killed six Sikh farmers last week near Tihari is none other than the one which had taken part in Operation Bluestar in 1984.
The farmers were on their way to collect diesel. Lt Col Bawa Sunder Singh in his book ‘Tradition never Dies’ writes that the Bihar Regt of the Indian army mainly consists of Brahmins from Bihar and UP. This regiment was raised in the early 1960s on the ruins of its predecessor the Bengal Regt. which the British disbanded during World War II when its men failed to show any fighting prowess on the Mesopotamian front.
Although reports talk of the possibility of the men responsible for the Tihari outrage will be charge sheeted observers feel there is little scope for any action because those controlling Punjab affairs in Delhi are committed fascists bent upon wreaking vengeance on the Sikhs. They cannot allow the morale of their brethren in Punjab to suffer.
