CALCUTTA (PTD): Calcutta, the Metropolis long said to be dying with its ever-increasing populace, is at last in for a facelift with the planning commission approving an ambitious Rs 1.2 ‘mega city” project to improvise the city’s infrastructure. ‘The project aims at extending and improving drinking water facilities, sewerage system, building housing infrastructures and setting up satellite townships.
West Bengal’s urban development and information minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee told newsmen on Tuesday that the 10year project, to be implemented in phases, would also consist of a world trade center and a sprawling exhibition ground.
The state and central governments would provide 25% each and the rest 50% of the fund would be given by the central government’s financial institutions. The minister said the state government had nearly finalized the Calcutta Urban Development Plan (CUDP4) for which a sum of Rs 3.5 billion would be earmarked.
Bhattacharjee said the federal government had approved an Rs 1,32billion project to preserve the wetlands in Calcutta’s Easter out skins with a view to preserving the ecological balance.
The minister said that a modem planetarium would be set up in the city with Japanese collaboration.
