SRINAGAR: A devastating fire destroyed several buildings in Srinagar’s most fashionable business center in Lambert Lane along the Sherwani Road popularly known as Residency Road.
Spread over 300 metres, the buildings, mostly hotels, and several offices and a branch office of State Bank of Patiala from where the fire originated around 2020 hours.
There was no immediate report of loss of life as all the hotels were unoccupied, police said.
Some of the destroyed buildings have shopping complex on the ground floor and are opposite to the main branch of the State Bank of India and Jammu and Kashmir Bank.
Fire engines which reached the spot immediately could do little as the painted wood caught fire in no time.
The local population could not come to the aid of firemen because of curfew restrictions from 1800 hours onwards.
