Sir,
The recently formed UC Berkeley Sikh Students Association (UCBSSA), on March 24 and May 5 held the Big Brother/Sister Day. We took young children out and let them just enjoy themselves in the company of young adults. Many older Sikh students have grown up here and can relate in a closer way to the children. The older students served as role models.
We have set many friendships in this new generation of children who will one day have to carry Sikhism forward. When we did these two events, we basically played such games as football soccer and softball and ate. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Dr. and Mrs. BAL of Stockton and Dr. and Mrs JP Singh of El Sobrante for all their help.
Many children feel they are faced with the situation of confusion over what being a Sikh is all about and very few are ever exposed to an environment that promotes free and open dialogue about Sikhism. UCBSSA stands for open discussion. As many of us are to stay in America, we need to clear away any stereotypes that society may have about us.
There is also an attempt to get classes begun in both Sikh Studies and Punjabi. We seek the help of the community in this. We invite knowledgeable speakers on topics related to Sikhism to come speak ‘on campus. Such lectures would be open to all people and would greatly educate the community and the campus community at large. All assistance would be appreciated.
