SRINAGAR: A timely tip off by intelligence agencies thwarted a militant plan to blow up the Border Security Force headquarters here, while elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir, 18 militants and a security man were killed and 29 arrested Saturday evening.

The spokesman said one person was killed in cross-fire between militants and security forces in Anantnag district and another was killed in cross-fire in Badgam district.

Another person was killed in cross-fire at Shalipora in Kupwara district.

He said militants shot dead Ghulam Mohammad Wani at Nagbal in Baramulla district.

Director General of Police B.S. Bedi said that six militants were killed in a gun-battle with security forces in Kupwara district. He said four other militants were killed in another fierce fight encounter with the security forces in Anantnag district. Another militant was killed in a gun-fight with security forces.

Bedi said that during the past two weeks61 militants including, nine “area commanders” were killed and 353 were arrested. He said that during the same period, 142 weapons and a large quantity of ammunition were recovered.

An official spokesman said, that intelligence agencies detected and defused a highly powerful time bomb planted in a shop, which is right under the building complex housing the BSF headquarters.

Security forces shot dead five Pak-trained Kashmiri militants while they were attempting to cross over to the Indian territory from the Line of Actual Control (LAC), in Poonch sector.

An Amy jawan was injured in the firing. Security forces returned the fire killing five militants on the spot, while the others managed to return to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The injured Army jawan Naib Subedar Allaudin has been admitted to the Army hospital. He was stated to be out of danger.

The spokesman said this was the 39th meeting of the committee and during earlier meetings, more than 1,000 militants, who were found to have been uninvolved in any serious crime were released.
