ISLAMABAD (PTI): Pakistan Premier Benazir Bhutto in an effort to build pressure on New Delhi on the Kashmir issue has urged leaders of various countries to use their influence to persuade India to end what she construed as repression in Kashmir.

Bhutto said in her special communication that the friendly ties those countries have with both India and Pakistan could be utilized to ensure concrete steps for reduction of tension in the region and the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

 

The leaders to whom Bhutto has written include the heads of government in China, Egypt, France, Germany, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Kingdom, the United States, and Senegal.

A message has also been addressed to the UN secretary general.

Ata weekly press briefing here on Noy.10, foreign secretary Saharyar Khan said Islamabad wanted a negotiated, peaceful settlement of the Kashmir question but ruled out resumption of dialogue with New Delhi in the absence of what he termed “a proper atmosphere.”

The foreign secretary said the exercise of holding talks would be futile without a separate agenda for a “serious and meaningful” discussion on Kashmir.
