Amritsar —The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president, Mr. Gurcharan Singh Tohra, on Saturday denied a news item appearing in a section of the press that he had described Indira Gandhi as a “martyr.” A release issued by the SGPC quoting Mr. Tohra, said he was ‘misquoted’? When he said that for the Sikhs, Beant Singh, one of the assassins of Indira Gandhi, was a martyr.”
Mr. Tohra alleged that newsmen had also ‘‘misquoted” him in connection with Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. In reply to a question, Mr. Tohra had said he considered Bhindranwale as a “great martyr’’ if the latter was no more alive. But he could not say that Bhindranwale was no more in the world, Mr. Tohra added. He said, “‘I pray for Bhindranwale’s well-being wherever he is.
