Both father and son were Persian scholars, hailing from village Jambar of Lahore. It was time of Zakria Khan of Lahore in 1745, that Subeg Singh was appointed state attorney. A jagir of one lakh with a title of Nawab was offered for the Khalsa so that Khalsa should settle in peace. Subeg Singh conferred the title of Nawab on Kapur Singh and he did the lawyer job. He was knownas Vakil Sahib. For some time, he was Kotwal of Lahore too, when he got constructed several Gurdwaras and Shaheed Ganj.
Once Shahbaj Singh had a discussion with Maulvis criticized Islam and defended Sikhism. On the complaint of Maulvis, he was asked to embrace Islam. On refusal, he along with his father was broken on wheels. Shahbaj was just 18. Later on breaking Sikhs on wheels was a common punishment by: T.S. Sandhu, Principle Khalsa School, Fremont CA.
