There was a man named Sri Laihna. He ws an innocent and good man. He lived in Amritsar. He was an honest and rich man. Sri Laihna was a shopkeeper. He worshipped the goddess Durga. Many people in the village did, too. Some people visited the temple (Jawalamukhi). It’s in the Himalayas. Bhai Laihna used to go with the worshippers of Durga as their leader. He wore bells on his hands and feet. He danced before the goddess. The bells tinkled as he danced. He kept doing it until he was an old man.

In his village lived a Sikh, or follower of Guru Nanak. His name was Bhai Jodha. He did not worship Durga. Sikhs don’t worship gods or goddesses. All Sikhs worship only one God. One day Bhai Laihna heard Bhai Jodha singing sweet, sacred songs. He liked it. He told Bhai Jodha to teach him it. So, he did. He told him about Guru Nanak. The Guru was an old man. He lived in Kartarpur The town is now in Pakistan.

A short time later, he and some villagers started on their journey to Jawalamukhi. While the villagers rested, Sri Lainha was eager to see Guru Nanak. So, he took a horse and went. He met this tall, strong, cheerful man. “Please tell me the way to Guru Nanak,” asked Sri Lainha. The man said to follow him. The old man pointed to a gate. Sri Lainha went in and a man showed him where Guru Nanak was. When he went into the room, he saw that the man he met on the road was Guru Nanak. They talked and talked. When they finished, it was time to go home and so Sri Lainha neyer went to Durga’s temple.
