AMRITSAR, Punjab, India: Sikh freedom fighters fought gun battles with police ringing the Golden Temple in Amnitsar on Tuesday for the second day running, witnesses said.
Heavy firing broke out in the evening between gunmen inside the vast complex, the Sikhs’ holiest shrine, and police outside in sandbag bunkers. There were no reports of casualties.
Police fired machineguns at the temple on Monday killing five people after gunmen shot a senior paramilitary police commander in the face.
Temple Head Priest Bhai Jasbir Singh Khalsa and other High Priests returned to Amritsar on Tuesday but police refused them curfew passes to enter the complex.
