NEW DELHI: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto Thursday suggested deployment of United Nations forces in Jammu and Kashmir to act as a watchdog to allay Indian fears of infiltration from across the border.
Bhutto told a press conference here that Kashmir was the “most important issue” between India and Pakistan and the important thing was to find a solution either in the light of the 1972 Shimla accord or under the U N auspices.
“India and Pakistan have to sit down and find a solution” she said.
Bhutto said if India found her suggestion for the deployment of the U N forces in Kashmir unacceptable a bilateral arrangement could be reached for policing the border.
She expressed the hope that the governments in New Delhi and Islamabad would pursue the matter after the polls in India.
Bhutto earlier called on Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar and discussed the present state of Indo-Pak relations.
She told reporters that in Pakistan Chandra Shekhar was considered to be a “voice of reason and moderation”.
Bhutto who is here to attend the funeral of assassinated Congress-I President Rajiv Gandhi met the prime minister after offering her condolences to Sonia Gandhi.
