CHANDIGARH: India has: strengthened Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s security with the appointment of a Deputy Inspector General level officer as: in charge. It is the first time that such a high ranking officer will take care of the chief minister. J.P.Birdi has been given this too. He will be assisted by five super intendants of police. The more than 150 strong security umbrellas will consist of men from national security guards, the central reserve police force and the Punjab armed police. Observers in Punjab have been surprised at the amount of forces deployed on Beant Singh’s security even as the authorities are not tired of claiming the end of Sikh militancy in the state.
