The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Jyoti Bassu has sought more Police from the Indian government to tackle the situation in his state arising out of Gurkhaland agitation.

‘According to All India Radio he told newsmen in New Delhi yesterday that the movement is violent and should be dealt with sternly. Mr. Bassu said he would meet the opposition leaders in Parliament to explain the position of the state government on the issue.

The radio said in West Bengal itself, the Police had to open fire at a tea garden in Darjeeling district on Saturday night to quell a violent clash between the rival groups. No one, the radio said, was injured in the firing.
