CALCUTTA: West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu feels that the Indian political situation is failing and that elections to parliament could take place in about six months.

He said in a media interview that the prime minister in any case could not last his full term of five years, Basu said in any other democracy the prime minister would have resigned after what happened at Ayodhya.

“I telephoned Rao on December 4 suggesting dismissal of the UP. Government and sending armed forces to stop demolition of the Babri masjid but evidently the prime minister did not change his mind, the Communist chief minister added, Basu at the same time asserted that Rao and the ruling party were “secular.”

He said his party would not support the Rao government’s economic policies in the ensuing meeting of the Indian parliament to pass the budgetary proposals.
