CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association has decided to file a special Leave petition in the Supreme Court against the decision of the High Court rejecting a public interest litigation seeking judicial or a CBI enquiry into the death of an ad: vocals, Kulwant Singh, and his family.

The petition was filed by a resident of Ambala district, saying that people were facing lot of hardships in view of the lawyers” strike to press their demand for the probe.

The court had, however, rejected the petition on the ground that it did not involve any public interest.

According to G.S.Nagra, secretary of the bar association, the decision to was taken at the general body, meeting held here last week, the meeting was convened to discuss the future course of action in the case.

Significantly, the matter was taken up in the first general body meeting convened by the newly elected bar association. According to an advocate, Ranjan Lakhanpal, some member also favored hosting a rally at Delhi on the issue. However, the demand was turned down by the house, he said.

It may be recalled that Kulwant Singh and his family were allegedly abducted and killed by the police early this year, The maiden caused widespread resentment among the lawyers who demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident by a sitting judge.

The demand was not conceded by the state government resulting in one of the largest strikes by lawyers in Punjab and UT. The strike lingered on for more than two months and ended when differences among the lawyers surfaced in the form of anti and pro strike factions.

The former president of the bar association, G.C. Dhuriwala had to resign on the question of continuing or calling off the agitation thus paving the way for fresh elections to the bar association on May 7.
