DHAKA, Dec. 22, Reuter: Bangladesh is to phase out cannabis and hashish production by 1989 in a drive against drug abuse, narcotics officials said today.

The officials told Reuters the government would lose some 700,000 dollars in revenue and the hashish ban would throw thousands of people out of work

Official figures show 550 authorized dealers sell hashish under license for medicinal reasons.

The officials said Cannabis grown in the northern region, would be outlawed in the next two years. Bangladesh produces about 20 tonnes of hashish from Cannabis annually.

‘The government took the step after reports that drug addiction ‘as increasing, the officials said.

Its magnitude has now become alarming”, one said.
