DHAKA: Police arrested the chief editor of a Bengali daily Ajker Kagoj here on Saturday night for publishing a news item making corruption charges against the finance and planning Minister Mr Saifur Rahman.

Kazi Shaheed Ahmed chief editor of the daily was picked up from his residence prior to which police went to the office of the newly-floated daily to search for the chief editor and the concerned reporter.

The editor of the paper Naimul Islam Khan and reporter Syed Borhan Kabir were also arrested by police regarding the same case. Earlier a legal notice was served on the chief editor of the daily following filing of a defamation case in the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court on behalf of the finance minister.

Kazi Ahmed was the first editor to be arrested by the BNP government which came to power in February last after the overthrow of General Hussein Mohammed Ershad’s regime.

Meanwhile the Bangladesh newspapers’ association in a statement demanded amendments to certain provisions of the criminal procedure code to stop harassment of editor’s publishers and journalists.
