WASHINGION: United States secretary of state James Baker has called large scale aid to Pakistan saying it would help support a fledgling democracy there and encourage economic development.

“For Pakistan our request for 573 million dollars in total bilateral assistance supports a fledgling democracy, encourages economic development, and assists military modernization. We salute Pakistan’s generous support for the Afghan people in their struggle for self-determination,” Baker said.

“We remain committed to achieving a lasting peace by helping the Afghans establish a broad based government through self-determination, Baker said.
