CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government spentRs4.43lakhon security for former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal during the past three years, the sales Assembly was told by the chief minister last week. Replying to a question by Jai Parkash, chief minister Bhajan Lal said that Badal was the only non-Haryana V.LP. who had been given security cover even while travelling or living out of Haryana.

BANGALORE: The chief minister. S.Bangarappa, Friday said an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Kannadiga families had crossed over from the Tamil Nadu border to Karnataka. Of these 5,000 to 6,000 families had reported at the reception centers set up in Gundiupet and Nanjan gud in Mysore district.

Briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting here, Bangarappa said relief camps had been set up in Kollegal, Nanjan gud and Gundlupet taluks to provide succor to about 7,500 to 8,000 Tamil families who had taken shelter following reprisals Other non Haryana VLPs were given such security only when they passed through Haryanastt, from Kannadigas. The number of Tamil families who had crossed over from  Karnataka to Tamil Nadu was  2,500 to 3,000, he added.

Bangarappa said the joint meeting of senior police officers from Karnataka and Punjab observers feels that Haryana politicians regard Badal an asset to that state for his support to Haryana’s claims to Punjab’s river water in violation of India’s constitution and law.
