NEW YORK: The Institute Medal of the American Iron and Steel Institute was awarded to four researchers of Inland Steel Company for a technical paper describing means for improving coke quality to contribute to more economical and more efficient use of coke in modern large blast furnaces.

The award was given at the annual General Meeting of the ASI at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel here. The medal is given annually for the previous year’s outstanding technical publication of significance to the steel industry. The current winners are Hardarshan S. Valia, Dennis D. Kaegi, Valery I. Addes, and Donald A Zuke of the Inland Steel Research Laboratories in East Chicago, Indiana.

  1. Hardarshan S. Valia, graduated from Nagpur University India with a gold medal. He did masters from Bryn Mawr College and Ph.D from Boston University in Geology. He taught as Assistant Professor of Geology at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland and Oberlin College, Oberlin Ohio.

Joined Inland Steel Company Research Laboratories, East Chicago, Indiana in 1979. Current position Senior Staff Research Engineer in the Primary Materials and Process Department. He has authored about 25 scientific articles and one book. He is married to Bhupinder Kaur Valia who is a physician with Michael Reese Heath Plan. Their two children are Vikram Singh (4.5 yr.) and Anu Kaur (2 yr).
