The average Metro driver faces an insurance fee hike of at least$100 in the New Year, an industry warns.

Under the new plan, insurance companies are allowed to hike their premiums by up to 5% to.co of greater benefits, such as the right to sue for pain and suffering and increased death benefit this comes on top of a 5% sales tax on auto insurance, introduced by the province July 1, an increase drivers are only now feeling.

Auto insurance has been a contentious issue in Ontario since the mid1980s, when double digit rate hikes prompted the previous Liberal government to bring in a no fault system that eliminated 95% of lawsuits.
