AMRITSAR: A meeting of the Akali Dal (M) demanded that Punjab be made an autonomous region and given Chandigarh and parts ‘of the adjoining states of Haryana Rajasthan and Himachal. This region must have all powers except defense, currency, foreign affairs and communications. Described as the political goal of the Sikhs, this demand was adopted as a resolution at the party’s working committee meet here on Sunday.

Dal (M) spokesman Gurtej Singh said the committee was unanimous in its support to the Sikh cause.

However Mrs. Bimal Kaur KhaIsa, Mr. Mand and Mr. Jagdev Singh newly elected MPs, walked out of the meeting as they felt this was only the Anandpur resolution which fell short of the aspirations of the Sikhs. The AISSF delegation also felt that anything short of the ideals of Sant Jarnail Singh would be selling the panth short.

An AISSF spokesman said their general secretary Harminder Singh Sandhu had made their stand clear Khalistan.
