SYDENY,. Reuter: Australia announced it would not support a West Indies proposal to ban cricket players maintaining links with South Africa.

A West Indies banning resolution is due to be debated by the International Cricket Conference (ICC) later this month.

Australian Cricket Board (ACB) Chairman Malcolm Gray told journalists: “The Board has made a decision not to support the West Indies resolution.

“Instead it has adopted a proposal that the playing countries set up a special committee of the ICC, with one representative from each of the seven test playing countries, which will hopefully come up with a solution to the substance of the West Indies resolution”, Gray said.

It is feared the West Indies resolution could lead to a black white split in the game.

Gray said an ACB board meeting today received a report about talks last week in Melbourne between representatives from India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Australia.

“The Board reconfirmed its opposition to the special meeting of the ICC on June 26 and was pleased to note that virtually all countries see two separate issues facing the cricket community  the West Indies resolution and the problem of access to India (for the World Cup).
