NEW DELHI: Attorney General G.Ramaswamy has resigned The resignation letter has been sent to the Prime Minister. Ramaswamys resignation comes in the wake of a row raging over some of his recent words and deeds. His repeated explanations were not adequate to end the row. The last straw on the camel’s back as it were was Opposition Leader L.K.Advanis demand for termination of Ramaswamys services as Attorney General Advanis case set out in a letter to the Prime Minister was that Ramaswamy had come under the cloud of a controversy which would make it hard for him to function as the Attorney General who is also to render advice on professional conduct.
The controversy arose first about a disclosure before the joint parliamentary committee probing the stock market scam that Ramaswamy had been given an overdraft of Rs 15 lakh by the Standard Chartered Bank. Ramaswamy instantly explained it away as a perfectly regular transaction that involved no favor to him.
He argued that this was panic for an advocate like him whose professional fee in a single year amounted to well over Rs 1 crore
