ISLAMABAD: The attorney general of Pakistan, Aziz A. Munshi Sunday charged in the Lahore high court that deposed Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had embezzled secret funds totaling Rs 700 million.

He alleged she used the money for “horse trading” during the no confidence motion against her last November and in the May assembly elections for Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

Bhutto had narrowly survived the no trust move against her as the combined opposition parties could secure only 107 votes, which was 12 short than the required 119 in the 237member assembly.

In the elections in Pakistan occupied Kashmir the Pakistan People’s Party emerged victorious dislodging the ruling Muslim conference.

In a written statement before the high court, the attorney general defended the grounds cited by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan on Aug.6, for dissolving the national assembly and sacking the Benazir Bhutto govt.

The Jatoi govt. which has been trumpeting charges of corruption, nepotism and abuse of office against Ms Bhutto has far not been able to prove any of its allegations.

A full bench of the high court is hearing four constitutional petitions challenging the dissolution of the national assembly.
