GUWAHATI: Resentments is growing among the people of Assam against the Indian proposal to induct police commandos to sup press ULPA freedom fighters
Even the C.P.I. which does not have much sympathy for freedom fighters of Assam has opposed the proposal.
A member of the central committee of the C P I Promod Gogoi has warned the Assam government of grave consequences if it deployed the Punjab police in Assam
Talking to reporters here Gogoi said that these policemen would kill innocent Assam youths in the name of combating insurgency. That will only aggravate the problem he said. He added that the Assam insurgency could not be eliminated by the army.
How that task could be performed by the police he asked. Gogoi wanted talks with militant groups to find a negotiated settlement.
However the Assam government defended India’s decision saying that there was nothing wrong with one state getting help from another state to combat insurgency. Even Delhi had Punjab police he said.
Meanwhile Punjab police chief K.P.S.Gill tied to assuage the ruffled feelings of Punjab policemen proposed to be sent to Assam later this month when he said that they would have to go for three months only. New batches would replace them after three months obviously these killer gangs would return after killing hundreds of Assam youth to give way to new gangs.
