NEW DELHI: The ashes of assassinated former Indian premier Rajiv Gandhi were strewn on the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas and immersed in the confluence of three rivers at Allahabad.
An urn containing the ashes was handed here Monday to a senior Indian Air Force officer by Gandhi’s son Rahul at Teen Murti house Rajiv Gandhi’s childhood home.
Earlier his widow Sonia Gandhi and children Priyanka and Rahul offered flowers and prayers at the lawns of Teen Murti house where the 34 flower-bedecked copper urns containing the ashes had been placed since Sunday.
The urns with the ashes which were gathered Sunday after a simple ceremony were handed over by Rahul to the state unit presidents of Gandhi’s Congress-I party and chief ministers of India’s 25 states who would take them to other sacred sites for immersion.
Besides the family close friends and Congress-I party leaders are accompanying the urns to Allahabad. The train would stop at dozens of town and cities including Amethi.
