ISLAMABAD (PTI): The Pakistan’s army’s job in Sindh is over and it is up to the government to take a decision on retaining the army in the southern province, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Gen Asif Nawas Janjua, said.

Asked if peace would sustain after the withdrawal of the army for Sindh, which had earlier this year been affected by dacoities, kidnappings of bomb blasts, Gen Janjua said it was not the army’s problem once it had withdrawn. “It is up to the government now,” he added.

Talking to newsmen at a function here Sunday the COAS expressed satisfaction with the operation to clean up saboteurs and anti-social elements,

The crime rate is down. The job is complete, But we are under orders and will stay in Sindh if ordered to do so,” “The News” said quoting the army chief.

The army was given a six-month mandate in May this year by the government under article 147 of the constitution to improve the law and order situation in troubled Sindh state.

The COAS felt that announcement of withdrawal before the expiry of stipulated period would give the government time to decide whether to retain the army any more,
